Epilobium canum - Calistoga

Fiery, rugged, and gloriously Californian, Epilobium canum ‘Calistoga’ brings a flash of late-season brilliance to dry, sunny gardens. This tough and beautiful California fuchsia erupts with masses of slender, tubular orange-red flowers that seem to glow against its narrow foliage, creating exactly the kind of color hummingbirds cannot resist. Just when many summer plantings are starting to soften or fade, ‘Calistoga’ steps in with sparks of nectar-rich bloom and a wonderfully wild, habitat-friendly charm.

‘Calistoga’ grows about 18 to 30 inches tall, forming a low, spreading mound that looks completely at home in water-wise gardens, native plantings, sunny banks, gravel gardens, rock gardens, slopes, and informal borders. Its warm, ember-like flowers are especially gorgeous woven among buckwheats, sages, yarrow, native grasses, ceanothus, and silver-leaved companions, where the contrast of flame-colored bloom and soft foliage creates a beautifully natural California palette.

Plant Epilobium canum ‘Calistoga’ in full sun with well-drained soil. Once established, it thrives with low water, though occasional irrigation during active growth can keep plants looking fuller and fresher. Cut back in winter to encourage dense new growth and an even better show the following season. Tough, colorful, and absolutely beloved by hummingbirds, this California fuchsia is a radiant choice for gardeners seeking to build beauty, movement, and wildlife value into dry summer landscapes.
